Gros Morne

Cell service is pretty iffy in Newfoundland so updates will be a bit irregular for the next while. Not a bad problem to have!

We had calm nights and slept better now that we were sheltered in Berry Hill campground. Getting up felt harder than it should be, I think the non-stop pace has gotten to us a bit. We had a slow start with coffee and pancakes while we discussed the weather. It looked like rain but it never really did. We decided to do the hike to Baker Brook Falls, a series of water falls that span the brook (river by size though). The falls span the river and had several tiers before finally ending at the bottom. Pete enjoyed a swim and I walked out barefoot with the tripod to get some photos.

Everything around Gros Morne is warning about moose, nothing about bears from what we have seen. Hunting season opened last week but we have yet to glimpse a moose. The park seems very open, turns out the moose have the  munchies and strip a lot of the vegetation. They have a moose ex-closure, an area where the moose are kept out of. That area is overgrown and is like walking through a thicket.

We got back to our campsite and took the rest of the day off, enjoyed our showers and swapping out some of our summer clothes for warmer stuff. We were up early the next day and hiked one of the ocean trails, checked out Green Point, before heading to Western Brook Pond for the boat tour of the inland fjord.

The pond is a long and deep lake with steep side walls that are higher than the CN tower by about 170m, can't remember the total height but it will be around 650m. We had sun, wind, and rain but not enough of any of them to affect the day. Between waterfalls, faces in the rock and sheer cliffs, we had lots to see and enjoy. The last waterfall was more of a mist thanks to the winds whipping through the fjord.

We walked the 3km back to the van where Pete met us with his usual frantic greeting. We threw a ball for him to burn off some pent up energy before leaving Gros Morne park. We parked up in some roadside campsites at Little Boone Bay Pond (lake) where Pete could run the gravel beach and have a bit of a swim. The night cooled off quickly after sunset, but we were rewarded with clear skies and the milky way over the still lake.

We are finding the night time temperature is around 14 to 16c, sometimes lower, so I have set the gasoline heater to come on at 3am to take the chill off. Certainly has helped us sleep through to Pete's morning wake up call around 7am. Not sure what it will be like with him when we get back to BC and shift 4 1/2 hours. Time will tell I guess.

  1. Beautiful place. Those cliffs really are tall! Interesting locations. Glad you three are having so much fun in NFL.

  2. So glad you did the boat tour!! It was a highlight for me. Loved Bakerbrook falls too, except our walk in s in the pouring rain, haha. Good thing we aren’t made of sugar. Love following your adventures
