Goodbye New Brunswick

After a cool night in Sussex, we visited with our friend for a while, watched some hot air baloons, had our coffee and said our goodbyes. It's funny how important a familiar face can be on a trip like this, it felt so good to be able to stop and have a day off with a friend.

We headed up to Heartland to the world's longest covered bridge at 1282 feet long. Pretty cool, even better we weren't over height so we could drive through it! A lot of the day felt like driving so we took a few diversions off the highway to find some good walking trails.

We stopped at Maliseet Trail along the St John's River. There is a waterfall up there, but it was almost dry due to the drought like summer they had out here. The walk in was a blaze of colour, and Pete was in his element chasing squirrels through the forest. He really is a happy dog.

We ended up back on the main highway that parallels the US border with Maine, and came up to Edmundston by the border with Quebec. We stopped at some local trails and went for another walk through the hardwood forest with Pete (who is now sleeping on my feet).

We decided to park for the night and will be heading into Quebec tomorrow. We are planning on catching the ferry at Rivière-du-Loup and head up to Saguenay before exploring Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier over the next couple of days. Depending on local weather the fall colors are coming into full bloom, but some areas are already getting the leaf drop. Hoping the leaves don't drop too soon!
