We took our time driving to Montreal, stopping in Cornwall to give Pete a run in the park by the St Lawrence River. Since arriving in Ontario, Harvest Hosts has been a viable option for overnight stays, even with short notice. We stayed in the parking lot of the Kahnawake Brewing Company before entering the city. A bit of road noise but otherwise good for us.
We got an early start and went down to the old port park, a location recommended by a local at the pub. Nice location but showed signs of a better day, likely being Expo 67. We could see the biosphere in the distance and picked out places of interest in the city. We relocated the van to be nearer to the old city then wandered the streets with Pete.
Montrealers don't seem to be into dogs that much so Pete met fewer friends this day. His favorite new friendwas David, a retired gent from Birmingham who shared some biscuits normally for the blond retriever he walks for friends. Starting out early was nice as there were few people and the cafes were just opening up. We found Notre Dame and other cool old churches and buildings. Statues of Cartier and Champlain and the old cobblestone streets.
As the day progressed, people showed up so we wandered down to the waterfront, watching the bungee jumpers bouncing up and down over the water, then being retrieved by a team in a Zodiac. It was a warm day and Pete was overheating so we returned to the van for him to cool down. He had drank most of our water over the course of the day but was still thirsty. Having Pete with us does limit what we do as he can't go in to many places, but we are realizing that we aren't bothered by that as we aren't really city tourists at heart anyway.
We drove out to the Olympic Stadium, they are still working on that roof, though not sure what the current plans are for it. The place seems massive when you are there, and the roof tower looks impressive. We got a better overall idea of the stadium from a viewpoint above the city - up close really throws your sense of size.
By 4pm, we felt done with the city and found another Harvest Host that has us parked in their apple orchard about an hour out of the city. We will be picking some apples and vegetables before we leave the farm. In the morning. Pete was so happy to be able to run free after being on leash for a big part of the day and it feels good being out of the city again.
We are heading towards Quebec City tomorrow but not going in till Sunday. We are staying at a HHost up there after taking the backroads up from Montreal. We found some neat little towns to stop and explore, but found that Pete wasn't welcome in one of the public parks. Weird place out here.
